TELEX RELEASE

Telex Release: cargo release without a paper original.

Telex Release can simplify collection, but it requires correct instructions and confirmation in the carrier’s process. A stamp on a scan is not enough by itself.

How Telex Release works

In practice, Telex Release means cargo may be released at destination without presentation of a paper original Bill of Lading after the carrier’s required procedure has been completed. The shipper usually surrenders the originals or submits a release instruction at origin, and the release status is communicated to the destination office.

02

When it is useful

It is often used when original documents may arrive later than the vessel or when the parties want to avoid courier delays. It is not automatic and depends on the B/L type, carrier procedure, payment status and shipper instructions.

03

What to confirm

Confirm that original presentation is no longer required, the carrier accepted the release instruction, relevant charges are settled and the destination office can see the release status. Official carrier confirmation or system status matters more than an image of a stamp.

04

Common risks

Typical issues include consignee data mismatches, unpaid charges, an incorrect B/L number, failure to transmit the release instruction or confusion between Telex Release and a Sea Waybill. These are different processes and should not be treated as interchangeable without confirmation.

What the sample shows

The anonymised sample shows a Bill of Lading marked Telex Release for an ocean shipment from China to Poland. Party details, shipment numbers and identifiers have been removed.

Educational material. Required documents depend on the product, route, delivery terms and current procedures.
